Why Seaweed Matters

From combating climate change to boosting nutrition, seaweed holds immense potential to positively impact us environmentally, economically, and socially.

Seaweed is more than a mere macro algae, it’s natures powerhouse!

Seaweed in Australia is commercially used for a variety of purposes, including food, cosmetics, fertilizers, animal feed, bioplastics, and even methane-reducing livestock supplements!

About the Australian Seaweed Industry

The global market for seaweed has more than tripled over the past two decades – the industry value has increased from A$7.5 billion to A$25.5 billion. Key sectors driving this growth include for example, biofuels, biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, fabrics, cosmetics, biostimulants, biofertisisers and methane-reducing supplements for livestock.

With Australia having the potential to become a significant player in the global seaweed market, The Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance (ASSA) has been established to serve as the body for industry development, advocating for environmentally responsible farming and providing a coordinated voice to government and media. Key industry initiatives include:

Australian Seaweed Industry Sector Development and Economic Impact
A report by Deloitte Australia which showcases the opportunities and Australia’s role in the global demand for seaweed derived products.

The National Hatchery Network and Hatchery & Cultivation Manual
This network has been established to support the cultivation of species like Asparagopsis (see video), and contribute to the Hatchery and Cultivation Manual for Red Seaweed. This manual is a step by step guide for first time Aspargopsis farmers.

The Australian Seaweed Industry Blueprint
We also invite you to read the Australian Seaweed Industry Blueprint which has been developed to outline our strategic plan to establish a sustainable and scaleable seaweed industry in Australia.

By 2050, this emerging industry could potentially contribute up to A$4.6 billion annually to Australia’s economy.

SEAWEED NATIONAL HATCHERY NETWORK, RED SEAWEED ASPARAGOPSIS

The National Hatchery Network is  tropical hub for Asparagopsis taxiformis. The objective of the network is to develop a series of hatcheries across the country to help fast track industry focussing on Asparagpsis taxiformis and Asparagopsis armata.

An industry of the future

The seaweed industry offers a unique opportunity to invest in a sustainable and forward-thinking sector that delivers benefits for people, the planet, and the economy.

By enhancing natural ecosystems, creating high-value bio-products, and addressing critical environmental challenges, seaweed represents a smart and impactful business choice. It’s an industry built on sustainable aquaculture practices that align with Australia’s vision to expand its role in the global aquaculture market.

We are a business of the future – one that creates value for people and the planet beyond financial metrics.

We value natural capital, provide ecosystem services and high-value seaweed bio-products. We are embracing a truly sustainable business model to create an industry of the future.

This new aquaculture industry will play a key role in achieving the Federal Government’s agenda for growing Australia’s share of the global aquaculture industry.

Seaweed has the power to clean up bays & oceans. Seaweeds are some of the fastest growing plants on the planet with the ability to absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and phosphorous. Left to build up in our bays and oceans, these elements can cause dead zones, acidification and toxic algae blooms.

Seaweed farms also provide habitat for marine life which is important for protecting and enhancing the value of our marine ecosystems and fisheries resources.

Seaweed ocean farms require no addition of feed, freshwater or fertiliser and there is no waste from marine plants, making it the most sustainable form of agriculture on the planet.

We are committed to best practice environmental stewardship to provide ecosystem services that enhance environmental values and, in doing so, contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water

Seaweed has many high-value end-uses for food, cosmetics, animal feed and other bioproducts. Seaweed has been eaten for centuries in many countries as it is a highly nutritious food source that is good for gut health. Seaweed is recognised as a superfood and researchers around the world are now looking at seaweed’s potential medical applications. Seaweed is also being used to make innovative bio fabrics and bioplastics that can replace plastic and reduce ocean pollution. Certain types of seaweeds can be added to animal feed and have been shown to significantly reduce methane emissions when fed to cattle.

A seaweed industry in Australia is a unique opportunity to leverage our existing capability & create new skilled jobs in marine science, aquaculture, biotechnology, manufacturing and maritime industries.

We want to help position Australia as a world leader in seaweed aquaculture, aquatech, and biotech innovation and create opportunities for more people to get involved in this sector.

Australia’s Competitive Advantage

Australia’s seaweed industry is steadily developing, leveraging its rich marine biodiversity, ongoing research efforts, and dedication to sustainable practices. As global demand for seaweed-derived products continues to grow, Australia is well placed to become a key contributor to this emerging sector.

The opportunity is for us (Australia) to have a regenerative Seaweed Industry, one that is not just a primary industry but also provides value added products and has the environmental credentials
